Skunk Cabbage
Western Skunk Cabbage gets its name from the malodorous, distinctive "skunky" odor that it emits. The brilliant color of the flowers earns it an alternative name of Swamp Lantern. Skunk Cabbage is one of the first plants to bloom in spring. They can begin to emerge in February and go through March. Flowers have distinctive odor, becoming stronger when bruised.
The entire flower will attract pollinating flies.
Skunk cabbage is a plant found in swamps and wet woods, along streams and in other wet areas of the Pacific Northwest. It grows under conditions of partial sun to partial shade.
